Synopsis: The year 2020 has brought unprecedented changes to everyone around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic changed everyone’s life and caused a lot of uncertainty and anxiety in the everyday lives of ordinary people in our communities.

During the Pandemic this year, everyone is thankful to the frontline health care workers for their selfless contribution. However, society generally is not aware that many professional engineers are also making sacrifices, risking their own lives by providing essential, and sometimes critical services to the public in this time of uncertainty. I have seen firsthand engineer colleagues and peers that were instrumental in the design and construction of critical care facilities, leading edge research of the COVID virus, engineering and manufacturing of essential ventilators and sanitizers, and upkeep of essential life safety systems to ensure the safety of the public.

Engineers have the analytical skills to dissect any issue, and we have the foresight to predict the needs of society. As professional engineers, we are in a good position to make a positive influence on the public welfare. We can use our knowledge and leadership skills to engineer certainty back into lives of the community.
